Comment Update

We want to thank everyone who stopped by.

We heard from several people that they had difficulty leaving a comment. Sorry for the inconvenience. The intent was to allow all comments to post. Apparently in all the planning, the anonymous comment box option was not saved. The comments setting has now been updated.

Come on in....

Welcome to Dave's Surprise 88th Birthday Blog Party....

Please have a drink....as you can see, the party is already underway...

The Facts.....

Dave was born July 27, 1921

The 208th day of the year

The Year of the Rooster

Under the Sign of Leo

Today Dave is 88 years old, or to put it another way:

32,142 days, or

771,408 hours, or

6,284,480 minutes, or

2,777,068,800 seconds....

All of a sudden, does 88 sounds really young? I think so.

Let's eat.....

Help yourself....although please remember, there will be cake later in the post....

The clam chowder and lobster rolls are delish.....

or maybe a no-carb salmon burger and salad for those of you who are thinking about the cake...

or let's really indulge with Corn on the Cob roasted on the grill, yellow or white. A friend from Corn Country (Iowa) says "Cooking it right on the grill is the only way to go" I agree, both are Yummm....

or should we get decadent and have pork ribs slathered with Tyler Florence's BBQ sauce....Mmmm... Enjoy it with a side of roasted veggies...double MMmmmmmm's ....

Now, that you're happily munching away, maybe we should get serious and mention some interesting events that happened in Dave's birth year - 1921

1921 - a look back.....

Did you know

...A circulated Morgan silver dollar issued in 1921 has a value of $15; uncirculated $30 or more.
...A circulated Peace silver dollar issued in 1921 has a value of $75; uncirculated $175 or more. (guess it's time to start searching through all those old coins stored in coffee cans in the attic...a literal silver mine could be waiting to be cashed in)

...In 1921 twenty-six southern counties in Ireland became independent of the U.K. Dave's father's family was from County Cork, Ireland. (Cork, Wait a minute, did you say Cork? Now I know why I have this need to save corks....

...June, 1921 Boeing wins a $1,448,000 contract to build 200 Thomas-Morse fighters for the U.S. Army, allowing the company to abandon furniture making. (how does making furniture prepare one for making aircraft fighters? Hey, gotta sit somewhere)

...The Three Musketeers was produced as a silent movie (The candy bar was introduced in 1932 and it featured three flavors - vanilla, strawberry and chocolate).

...The NY Giants beat the NY Yankees five games to three in the World Series. This was the last season of the experimental best five of nine World Series. Babe Ruth played for the NY Yankees. And, this was the first World Series to be broadcast on radio. Interestingly, all the games were played in the same ball park, no need for a subway series......... (Okay, what's the deal here, is the Baby Ruth candy bar named after The Babe or what?)

Interesting enough, Baby Ruth candy bars were also introduced in 1921 and again re-introduced in the 1980 movie: Caddyshack.....Nuff said..that movie almost destroyed the Baby Ruth candy bar!!!

The following corporations were founded in 1921 -
...Douglas Aircraft Company
...Radio Shack
...Land O'Lakes
...Greyhound Motors
...Gucci Fashions
...Dell Magazine
...Master Lock
...Pep Boys
...Loehmann's Department stores
...See's Candies

1921 saw the first
...state sales tax which went into effect on July 1st in West Virginia (it wasn't long before the other states jumped on the taxation bandwagon)

...geothermal power plant which opened in California

...wrapping machine for Hershey's kisses

...Albert Einstein won the Nobel Prize for physics

...It cost to mail a first class letter

... The heavenly scent of was launched on May 5th. Coco's lucky number was 5

...The most snow accumulated in a one day period was 75.8 inches at Silver Lake, Colorado in April

For those with a sweet tooth, these candy bars were also introduced -

Here's looking at you......

Those Crazy 88's.....

Math - 88 is the only number known whose square has no isolated digits (whatever that means)
Chemistry - Radium's atomic number is 88 (again, whatever that means)

Solar system - Mercury orbits the sun faster than any other planet - once every 88 days (at least I know what that means)

Movies - Gone With The Wind - 88 hours of film was shot

Music - A standard piano has 88 keys

Disney - The amount of autograph books sold annually, when placed end-to-end, would reach 88 miles into space (wonder if the Fisher Space Pen really would work 88 miles into space...Anyone know?)

Milk - 88% is water

Laundry - 88% is done by Moms (There's a reason for that...Mom's want the clothes to come out clean but still the same size and color...I'm sure everyone has had a helpful husband who has thoughtfully washed and dried his wife's wool dress or sweater to infant size...need I say more?)

Marriage - 88% of Americans marry at least once (wonder how many marry twice?)

Let's Party....

Yes, there are 88 candles...

Please, everyone join in singing:

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday, dear Dave
Happy birthday to you....

while I light the cake...

No need to worry, I have the Fire Department standing by...

My, the firemen are looking young these days...

Here goes....

Dave, QUICK, Make a Wish.....

Phew... we saved the house, but not the cake...

Anyone for a cupcake and champagne? Doesn't get sweeter than that...

I'm tired....is it over yet?

ALMOST.....

How about a "Scroll" down Memory Lane...
